Off direct object, a rejected doily...

 In January I received an email inviting me to take part to a selection for a local exhibition on the specific topic «direct object». Great! I thought. Unfortunately this topic hasn’t inspired me at all despite hours thinking about it… Finally I wasn’t satisfied about my artwork, artistically, technically and even intellectually speaking. Nevertheless I did the candidacy, without much conviction, and, without much surprise, I was rejected.

Even though this artwork isn’t as good as I wished, there is something funny in it, and anyway, showing you everything is the goal of this blog!

Direct object - Triptych about the doily - Acrylic on paper (40*50 cm each)

This triptych is a kind of artistic and humoristic tribute to an old-fashioned object : the doily. It was achieved with doilys really knitted by my grandmother and recovered in old boxes in her attic.

The first part of the artwork revisits the famous portrait in which Mona Lisa (by Leonardo DaVinci) is knitting a doily : it is an object of the past, an homemade and emotional object.

The second part shows the practical use of the doily, its interest in decorative arts, as retro and kitsch as it is!

In the last painting we can see the doily in a contemporary way. It is the real subject of the artwork, and its graphic symmetry is highlighted.
