Overlays

Inspired by trendy double exposition in photography, I too wanted to work on different layers, and play with contrasts or suggest sensations. Each one of the following artworks includes a drawn sheet of paper, with a superimposed papercut.

Dozens of little irregular squares are covered with something that looks much more like a random tear than a clear cut-out. The whole drawing reveals a mysterious and floating shape. Dry pastel and papercut ; 40*50 cm.

To the background with rectangles fading out with one another, I associated a rectangle of cut-outs of various sizes. The result is a geometrical, abstract, repetitive, and graphic composition. Dry pastel and papercut ; 40*50 cm.

A jellyfish cut-out is overlapped on a light and poetic drawing evoking the ocean depths. So our jellyfish goes away in a delicate movement. Dry pastel and papercut ; 40*50 cm.

The diamond-shaped (one of my favourite shapes with the triangle) geometrical cut-out, alternating full and empty elements distributes colours and insists on contrasts. Graphic effect. Dry pastel and papercut ; 40*50 cm.

We can see here a free "copy" of Impression Soleil Levant by Claude Monet (canvas which inspired the name of the artistic movement) with a "frame" that claims it is a very important painting, frame that insists on the "shining", on the future influence of the rising sun. It is a cultural influence but also a personal one : I approached art and painting thanks to the Impressionists when I was young. Dry pastel and papercut ; 40*50 cm.
